On successful completion of level 3, you will be awarded AATQB status, thereafter you will receive MAAT status once you have completed level 4. Both provide the ability to be used as your official title after your name.

Is the AAT Advanced & Professional Diploma in Accounting course suitable for me?

To begin this course, you must have completed the AAT Foundation Certificate in Accounting (Level 2) or gained the required accounting experience beforehand.

You must meet the following criteria:

  •  Be 16+ years (Otherwise, a guardian or parents’ consent is needed).
  •  Have good English language skills.
  •  Understand the fundamentals of mathematics.
  •  Be able to use a computer or laptop.

AATQB status and MAAT status (with full AAT membership) will be awarded by the accreditation body when qualified. Each status can be officially used after your name as a title. The status also provides the ability for you to submit final balances legally, for companies of any size.

Estimated salaries are between £32,500 to £42,500. However, some firms are known to offer over £60,000 a year. Salaries vary depending on industry and company.

Licence types and Services

When you have earned your AAT Level 3 and Level 4 qualifications, you can set up your own business and apply to provide either 5 services (Level 3) or 18 services (Level 4). These services include:

AAT Licensed Bookkeeper (Level 3) - Bookkeeping, Financial accounts, VAT, Computerised accountancy systems, and Payroll.

AAT Licensed Accountant (Level 4) - All the above plus: Financial accounts and accounts preparation for statutory purposes, Budgeting and forecasting, Management accounting, Personal and Business income tax, Inheritance, Capital gains and Corporation tax, Limited assurance engagement, Independent examination, Company secretarial services, Internal audit, and Forensic accounting.

Designatory Letters

Earning your AAT Level 3 and Level 4 qualifications will give you AATQB and professional MAAT status, letting you use the designatory letters AATQB and MAAT after your name. These designatory letters show you have gained the skills, experience and knowledge to work that employers are looking for, which can result in an increase in your earning potential. You can also now legally submit final balances for any sized organisation.

AATQB (gained with AAT Level 3) - An AAT Bookkeeping member is a qualified Bookkeeper who has been approved for AAT bookkeeping membership. Delegates who have earned their AATQB status can use the designatory letters AATQB after their name, and they can apply to run their own practice as an AAT Licensed Bookkeeper.

MAAT (gained with AAT Level 4) - An AAT full member is a qualified accountant who has successfully demonstrated the experience and skills necessary to be approved for AAT full membership. Delegates who have earned their MAAT status can use the designatory letters MAAT after their name and they can apply for a licence to run their own practice as an AAT Licensed Accountant or Bookkeeper.

AAT Advanced & Professional Diploma in Accounting Syllabus

Building on the skills and techniques you’ve developed during the AAT Foundation Certificate in Accounting Level 2, levels 3 and 4 will provide you with a detailed understanding of more complex accounting processes, to prepare you for senior job roles.

There are six modules that you’ll cover in the AAT Advanced Diploma in Accounting (Level 3):

  •  Advanced Bookkeeping
  •  Final Accounts Preparation
  •  Indirect Tax
  •  Management Accounting: Costing
  •  Ethics for Accountants
  •  Spreadsheets for Accounting 

The AAT Professional Diploma in Accounting (Level 4) comprises 4 mandatory modules and a choice of 5 options modules (of which you must complete 2).

 Mandatory Modules include:

  •  Management Accounting: Budgeting
  •  Management Accounting: Decision and Control
  •  Financial Statements of Limited Companies
  •  Accounting Systems and Controls
  •  Professional Diploma Synoptic Assessment

Plus choose 2 optional modules:

  •  Business tax
  •  Personal tax
  •  External auditing
  •  Cash and Treasury Management
  •  Credit Management 

It’s best to complete the mandatory modules first and then decide which optional modules you want to study, as your decision may change by the time you complete the mandatory modules. One other thing to consider is that if you’re considering specialising in tax and time is approaching the end of the year, it’s best to wait until the new year, to ensure you have the most up-to-date books, as tax changes year-on-year. 

AAT Advanced & Professional Diploma in Accounting Exams

Your personal AAT tutor will run your live online classes (Level 3 only) so that you get the benefits of learning in a college class without leaving your home. Live online classes cover revision sessions and practice papers on the units you need to pass your exams, including Advanced Bookkeeping, Final Accounts Preparation, and Indirect Taxation. 

For Level 3, when you are ready to take your assessments, you have two options:

Online Assessments directly with e-Careers - To take your assessment from the comfort of your home, please contact e-Careers Customer Service to book and pay for your assessment. (Level 4 has this option from September 20th 2021).

Test Centre Assessments - You can still choose to sit your exam at a suitable AAT approved assessment venue. We can help find the closest one to you. Exam fees vary from centre to centre.

For Level 4 you can sit your exam at a suitable AAT approved assessment venue.

Exams are computer-based exams, and there will be one per module. These exams will includes multiple-choice questions.

Exam fees are not included in the course cost.

Level 2 synoptic assessments

In agreement with Ofqual, the UK qualifications regulator, the AAT has announced the intention to issue calculated results for eligible students studying the Foundation Certificate in Accounting - Level 2 (Level 5 in Scotland) and Foundation Diploma in Accounting and Business (Level 2).

AAT Exams Update - COVID-19

Pearson VUE-owned test centres will be following the recommendations from the CDC and World Health Organization for preventing the spread of COVID-19 and protecting testing candidates and their staff. Candidates are asked to comply with the health and safety guidelines outlined below to keep fellow candidates safe. (Face masks are now required while testing at Pearson VUE-owned test centres).

What you need to know

You will not be admitted to the test centre and should reschedule your exam if:

You have tested positive for COVID-19 (unless you have been symptom-free and fever-free for at least 72 hours without the use of fever reducing medicine and at least 14 days have passed since your last exposure, or you have received two negative COVID-19 test results in a row, 24 hours apart)

You are currently experiencing or have experienced one or more associated symptoms within the last fourteen (14) days (unless You have been symptom-free and fever-free for at least 72 hours without the use of fever reducing medicine):

  • Shortness of breath
  • Cough
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Sore throat
  • Loss of smell

You live with or have had close contact with someone who has confirmed or suspected COVID-19 (unless at least 14 days have passed since your last exposure).

Have been or are under home quarantine or centralized observation by government or healthcare authorities (unless at least 14 days have passed since your quarantine or centralized observation has been lifted by the government or healthcare authorities).
